Marrakech, also called the ocher city or the red city, is only the 4th city in Morocco
after Casablanca, Rabat and Fez but it is undoubtedly the tourist capital of
kingdom.
Marrakech is located at the foot of the Atlas Mountains in south-central Morocco and has
nearly a million inhabitants. It is divided into two distinct parts: the historic city or
Medina and the new city:
Medina:

The medina of Marrakech constitutes the nerve center and the historic heart of the city of
Marrakech. Covering a total area of 600 hectares, it is one of the largest
vast Medinas of Morocco and the most populated in North Africa. Its refinement and specificity
urban planning arise directly from the total virginity of the land on which it was erected
in the 11th century. Built around a military encampment, Qsar El Hajar, and a market, it was
increased by a kasbah in the 12th century to protect it from repeated attacks by Berber tribes
of the Haouz plain, thus contributing to sustainably establishing Almoravid hegemony. THE
famous ramparts of the old town of Marrakech underwent significant modifications
dynasties. Thus, they were repeatedly pierced with new doors (Bab in Arabic).
Today, the height of the walls varies between 8 and 10 meters and they extend over a
total distance exceeding 19 kilometers. The medina is included on the heritage list
World Heritage Site since 1985, several monuments are included in the inscription as
the Koutoubia mosque, the ramparts and monumental gates, the gardens, various palaces,
the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Saadian tombs or even the Jemaa el Fna Square.

The most interesting monuments as well as the majority of museums in Marrakech are located
in the Medina. Unmissable, you will probably spend most of your time there. There
Medina is thus the most charming and touristy part of the city. It’s a real
labyrinth of alleys, squares, souks where you will undoubtedly spend wonderful moments.

New city :
Its two main districts are Guéliz and Hivernage:
Guéliz:
Dating from the French colonial era, the main streets of Guéliz are home to top restaurants
range of Moroccan and European cuisines, as well as cabarets, chic bars,
art galleries and mainstream fashion boutiques. There you will find the Majorelle garden, founded
by the painter Majorelle, then purchased by Yves Saint Laurent. the Majorelle garden has
lawns, cacti, flowers and various elements painted in cobalt blue. Next to him is the
Yves St-Laurent Museum, MYSLM, dedicated to the famous fashion designer.

Wintering:

chic international venues hosting concerts, the refined and modern Hivernage district is
renowned for its nightlife. Featuring domes and columns in the style of ancient Egypt, the
Royal Theater features an amphitheater where concerts take place. Not far from there, with their
immense mirror of water and the mountains as a backdrop, the Menara gardens date from the
12th century.
